(Dearborn County, Ind.) – Civic engagement is one of the educational pillars of the 4-H experience.

Last month, four Dearborn County 4-H members participated in Indiana 4-H Day at the Indiana Statehouse.

Aaron, Ethan, and Jaden Jarvis participated in educational sessions, a private meeting with Senator Randy Maxwell, and toured the Statehouse, which included the Governor’s Office and Supreme Court Chambers.

Aiden Slayback also participated in 4-H Day as a student page for Senator Maxwell. Slayback’s experience included getting an inside perspective of the Senator’s office, duties, responsibilities, and daily schedule.

All four participants experienced learning about a typical Indiana legislative session, the lawmaking process, the governor’s role in legislation, and how representatives and senators work on behalf of their constituents to make their voices heard.

Liz Beiersdorfer, Dearborn County 4-H Youth Development Educator chaperoned the experience with the youth and shared, “Getting a first-hand experience in state government can be the first step to becoming a responsible citizen for a lifetime.”
