Oldenburg Academy to Celebrate 50 Years of Title IX

The celebration happens Tuesday night when the Lady Twisters basketball teams hosts Milan.

(Oldenburg, Ind.) - Tonight's Oldenburg Academy girls' basketball game is all about honoring the progress made for women and girls in athletics and academics.

Oldenburg Academy Athletics will mark a significant milestone on January 28, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark federal law that revolutionized gender equality in education.

The celebration will take place during the Academy’s home basketball game against Milan.

Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs and activities. While the law’s impact has been wide-reaching—ensuring equal opportunities in admissions, academic programs, and hiring practices—it is perhaps best known for transforming the landscape of women’s sports. In 1975, specific regulations were added to ensure equal opportunities for female athletes, giving educational institutions a three-year window to meet the new standards.

To commemorate this pivotal moment in history, Oldenburg Academy women’s basketball teams will wear special ICA edition uniforms as a tribute to the women athletes who paved the way for future generations. During the game, fans will hear historical facts about Title IX, and former players will be acknowledged for their contributions to the growth and success of the girls’ basketball program.

The junior varsity game will tip off at 6:00 PM, followed by the varsity matchup. This celebration will serve as both a reflection on the achievements of the past five decades and a reminder of the continued need for equality in sports and education.
