Milan did exactly what they set out to do in 2024, win a sectional championship. They did so by defeating rival North Decatur in the title game, breaking a streak of five-straight post season losses to the Chargers.
"It always feels good to win a sectional championship," said Head Coach Ryan Langferman. "It is the hardest trophy to win in high school sports. After you win the sectional, anything can happen."
At the Regional, Milan ran into Providence, but despite the 28-10 scoreline the Indians held their own with the eventual Class A State Champs.
After experiencing a successful postseason in 2024, the Indians are setting their sights on a deeper postseason run in 2025. Milan will also be afforded the chance to win a conference championship for the first time since 2020 with the return of the Mid-Indiana Football Conference.
They will be joined by North Decatur, South Decatur, Switzerland County, Edinburgh and Brown County.
"I'm excited about it. I didn't know that I would miss the conference that much, but I did," said Coach Langferman. "It definitely makes it easier scheduling. It is nice to have the meaningful games during the season. It's nice for our players to be recognized as all-conference players. That's one of the reasons we went to the individual helmet decal stickers to help these guys show off their achievements when the conference broke up."
On the field, the Indians lost 10 seniors to graduation including Wideout Dylan Offill and offensive lineman Landon Stanley, who both made the IFCA 1A Senior All-State Team. Offill led the Indians in receiving with 51 receptions, 656 yards and four touchdowns. He played a crucial role on defense as a starting safety, racking up 75 tackles and four interceptions. Stanley starred on the offensive line, paving the way for 2,450 rushing yards. Most of those yards came on the legs of Austin Green, who ran for 1,424 yards and 17 scores.
Other notable departures include starting H-back and safety John McKeown, starting offensive linemen Kyle Gotts and Maison Taylor, nose tackle Brandon Simms, linebackers Cameron Gilb and Carson Betz and kicker Dylan Hon.
OFFENSE
Returning for the Indians is senior quarterback Wyatt Marsh. According to Indiana Preps, he had the 9th most passing yards among returning senior quarterbacks with 1,976 yards. Marsh completed 67 percent of his passes with 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
Wideout Micah Norman and tight end Grant Langferman are Marsh's top two returning targets. Langferman, an Indiana Preps Top 22 All-State Underclass honoree, caught 32 passes for 535 yards and six touchdowns last season. Norman added 338 yards and two scores. Caydin Davidson has had a strong summer and appears ready to flank Norman at receiver.
Noah Morgan is expected to be utilized as a weapon in two tight end sets with Langferman.
Marsh is the Indians top returning rusher, going for 319 yards last season. Senior Brady Alcorn is penciled in as the starting running back, while a host of younger players, including freshman Beckett Langferman, may also see carries.
On the offensive line, JJ Mutz, Lukas Hensley and Zane Richardson are set to start up the middle. Levi Pierce, Kayden Steele, Jackson Meyer, Jose Blanco are battling for the open starting tackle spots.
"Where we start the season, and where we end the season is going to be different. We are going to have some kids that start the season that maybe give a guy a break for a series and by the end of the season they are playing half the game or maybe they are a starter. I think our number of two-way starters may diminish by the end of the season," said Coach Langferman.
DEFENSE
The defense is led by linebacker Grant Langferman, who was an IFCA Junior All-State selection as a sophomore. Langferman led the Indians in tackles last season with 95, including 16 tackles for a loss.
JJ Mutz, Colby Bushhorn and Brady Alcorn round out a solid linebacking corp. Hunter Wickheiser
Zane Richardson returns as a multi-year starter on the defensive line. He will be joined by defensive ends Noah Morgan and Josh Pettit.
On the back end. Micah Norman and Caydin Davidson have the inside track at cornerback. The coaching staff has multiple options for the starting safety spots, which has been described as the quarterback of the Indians' defense. The options are Colton Harris, Gavin Trenkamp, Levi Smith and Beckett Langferman.
GOALS / EXPECTATIONS
"Win one game at a time. You're ultimate goal on Friday nights is to not hurt yourself. You don't want to turn the ball over, penalties, limit those, stay healthy. And give yourself the best chance when the tournament gets here. The sectional is the hardest trophy to win. A lot of things have to go right to do that. We want to be our best when that time comes but ultimately, right now, we are focused on beating Rushville week one," said Coach Langferman.
