(Metamora, Ind.) - The Whitewater Canal State Historic Site has received a commitment from the state for a $7 million matching grant to support crucial work to restore and preserve the site.
As a next step, Whitewater Canal State Historic Site is required to appear before the Indiana State Budget Committee to request the release of the state-allocated $7 million before ISMHS can move forward with work on the Duck Creek Aqueduct, Laurel Feeder Dam and lock 24.
"This milestone is the result of a long, hard-fought process that began several years ago and reflects the dedication of many individuals who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Countless local advocates, preservationists, community leaders, and state officials gave their time, expertise, and persistence to keep this project moving forward. There are far too many to name individually, but their collective effort made this moment possible," said State Rep. Lindsay Patterson (R-Brookville).
The original $14.4 million preservation project that was proposed in 2022 would have included work on lock 25 and a new canal boat and docking system.
"Recently, we updated the site evaluation and environmental review, revealing further deterioration and erosion. Once the project cost estimate was updated and adjusted for inflation, it increased to $17.5 million, and we had to adjust the project's scope to fit the available funding," reads a statement from Whitewater Canal State Historic Site.
"This is a major project totaling more than $14 million and represents a significant investment in the future of southeastern Indiana. This investment will preserve our history, strengthen tourism, and support long-term economic growth. This is a proud day to be part of southeastern Indiana. The Whitewater Canal is a treasured historic asset, and this investment ensures it will be protected and restored for future generations," State Rep. Patterson added.
