Urn Thief Gets $20K Bond

Alan R. Smith, Jr.

Hamilton County Sheriff's Office

(Cincinnati, Oh.) - The Harrison man accused of stealing bronze urns from a Cincinnati mortuary remains in jail Thursday.

Alan Smith, Jr. appeared in Hamilton County Municipal Court Wednesday to be arraigned on charges of theft, vandalism and damaging a memorial to the dead.

Smith, 26, was ordered held on $20,000 bond, which is coincidentally the same amount the 20 burns he stole were roughly valued at.

Smith had been recently fired from the Cincinnati Cremation Company when he stole the urns, dumping human ashes from inside and selling them as scrap metal.

The case is scheduled to go to a grad jury on February 24 to decide what charges Smith should be tried on.
