An accident involving a semi truck which spilled its load of fertilizer on U.S. 50 in Whitewater Township has been cleared.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office says the accident occurred on U.S. 50 just east of Lawrenceburg Road at about 8:41 a.m.

Semi driver Johnny Byrd, 44, of Rushville, Indiana, struck from behind a stopped pickup truck which was preparing to make a left turn onto a private drive from the highway.

After the collision, Byrd’s truck overturned onto its passenger side, spilling a load of dry farming fertilizer.

The driver of the pickup truck, Gary Lee Lewis, 47, of Middletown, Ohio, was transported to Harrison-Mercy Hospital by the Lawrenceburg Fire Department for minor injuries.

Byrd was treated at the scene for minor injuries. He has been cited for Failure to Maintain an Assured Clear Distance Ahead.

The crash scene was cleared by crews with the Ohio Department of Transportation. Although the spilled load was fertilizer, it did not constitute a hazardous material situation, the sheriff’s office said.
