Several goats died in a barn fire early Monday morning in Ripley County.

The Milan Fire Department was called to the blaze at 4203 East U.S. 50 at about 5:00 a.m. for a report of a fully engulfed barn, said department Lt. Mike Alloway.

The barn which house goats was a total loss, according to Alloway. He did not know of the specific number of animals which perished in the fire.

Firefighters remained on the scene for nearly two hours extinguishing the fire. U.S. 50 was closed for about an hour because there was no other usable access to the barn which was situated near the highway.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation, although no foul play is suspected, said Alloway.
