UPDATE: Suspect, Officers Identified In Dearborn Co. Shooting

UPDATE: The investigation will be handed over to the Dearborn County Prosecutor’s Office for review at its conclusion.

Update published Sunday, January 13 at 7:10 p.m.:

Indiana State Police have identified the man killed during an officer-involved shooting in Dearborn County as Christopher A. Schmitt.

ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said Schmitt, 58, lived at the Sunman area residence where the shooting occurred Saturday morning, January 12.

State Police also released the names of the officers who shot at Schmitt when he pointed a firearm at them. They are Trooper Jordan Craig and Dearborn County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Weigel.

Craig has been with the state police for three years. Weigel has been an officer with the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department for over a year.

The investigation will be handed over to the Dearborn County Prosecutor’s Office for review at its conclusion, Wheeles said.

 

Update published Saturday, January 12 at 5:45 p.m.:

A Dearborn County Sheriff's deputy and an Indiana State Police trooper were confronted by a man with a gun as they arrived at a disturbance call on Five Point Road Saturday morning.

The call came in around 10:50 a.m. about a disturbance reported to involve a man with a firearm at the home in the Sunman area, says ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles. The two officers arrived and began to approach the residence when they were confronted by a man who pointed a firearm at the officers. 

Both officers fired their weapons at the suspect. He was struck by at least one of the officers' rounds.

The officers began to render immediate first aid to the suspect. The unidentified man was quickly transported to Margaret Mary Health in Batesville, where he was pronounced dead. 

Wheeles says none of the officers were injured in the incident.

The names of the officers and the deceased suspect have not been released, but will be provided in a future update, according to Wheeles.

Detectives from the Indiana State Police-Sellersburg District will be leading the investigation. The findings will be forwarded to the Dearborn-Ohio County Prosecutor's Office for review.

(Sunman, Ind.) - A suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Dearborn County on Saturday, January 12.

Officers with the Dearborn County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police responded to a home on the 12300 block of Five Point Road near Sunman on Saturday morning. According to the sheriff's activity log, the call was related to an overdose.

When officers arrived, there was gunfire.

Indiana State Police say all officers were okay. The suspect, however, died.

No names have been released. State police are expected to release more information soon.
