Report: Indiana 4th Least Politically Engaged State

Among neighboring states, Kentucky wasn't far behind, while Ohio landed more toward the middle of the pack.

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – With Election Day right around the corner, personal finance company WalletHub is taking a look at the most and least politically engaged states.

In 2016, a record 137.5 million Americans voted, but that number only accounts for 61.4 percent of the voting-age population. The numbers were much worse for midterms in 2014, where a record-low 36.4 percent of eligible voters hit the ballot box.

According to WalletHub, Indiana is the 4th least politically engaged state.

In order to determine the ranking, WalletHub compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia across 10 key indicators of political engagement, ranging from the percentage of registered voters in the 2016 presidential election to total political contributors per adult population.

Indiana was 34th in the percent of registered voters in the 2016 Presidential Election. The Hoosier state also received low marks for the percentage of electorate who voted in the 2014 midterm and 2016 presidential elections. However, Indiana did rank 18th in civic education engagement.

Kentucky ranks as the 9th least political engaged state. Ohio, which is typically a swing state in presidential elections, ranked near the middle of the pack at 30th overall.

Among developed nations, the U.S. ranks 26th out of 32 when it comes to voter turnout.
