(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Community members are invited to visit Newtown Park in Lawrenceburg on July 4 for the unveiling of a modern replica of Dearborn County's World War II Honor Roll Memorial.
This incredible display pays tribute to the thousands of brave men and women from Dearborn County who answered the call to serve during World War II.
Originally erected in Newtown Park in 1942 and expanded during the war years to include more than 3,000 names, the Honor Roll became a powerful symbol of community pride, sacrifice, and patriotism.
As of today, the names of 2,900 men and women who served have been identified. There is no single repository for this information. The list is a compilation of newspaper articles, books, official courthouse records, and myriad sources.
“We hope this magnificent replication, and the speeches on this occasion, will help the children and grandchildren have some understanding of the sacrifices, the rationing, the hand me down clothes, the bald tires, the empty gas tanks, the daily air raid sirens, and the lonely, sleepless nights endured not only by those in uniform, but those who steadfastly supported the effort on the home front,” reads a statement from the Dearborn County Historical Society.
This project would not have been possible without the dedication and vision of Jim Fulton of Greendale, Indiana. A decorated military veteran himself, Jim spent countless hours researching records, locating names, gathering historical information, and working closely with Sign A Rama to bring this historic memorial back to life for future generations.
The Honor Roll Memorial will be unveiled at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4
