(Erlanger, Ky.) - A man who was shot by police outside an Erlanger bar last year is heading to prison.

Dexter Helton was sentenced Monday to 15 years behind bars. He had pleaded guilty to two counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree and a single count of Fleeing Police 1st Degree.

Helton, 41, was shot outside Peecox Bar & Grill on Donaldson Highway on April 25, 2018 when he pulled a gun while fleeing officers who tried to serve an arrest warrant. The firearm was pointed at two Erlanger officers during the brief foot pursuit.

“We want to thank the Kentucky State Police and the Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for their professionalism in regards to this case. We especially want to thank Sgt. Chad Girdler, K9 Asco and Officer Greg Pohlman for their valor and heroism they displayed during this incident,” the Erlanger Police Department said in a statement.

Erlanger Police released a body cam video of the officer-involved shooting on Monday. The video was posted to Facebook.
