Man Shot In Laurel Tuesday Died In Hospital Wednesday

By Mike Perleberg (Laurel, Ind.) - A shooting in Franklin County earlier this week has turned deadly. On Tuesday morning, Dwight Jones, 59, was found lying in his pickup truck on Edgerton Street in Laurel suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Fayette Regional Hospital by ambulance, then transferred by helicopter to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Indiana State Police announced Thursday night that Jones, of Laurel, had died on Wednesday as a result of the gunshot wound. Sheriff’s investigators said on Tuesday that Jones had been involved in a domestic dispute on Edgerton Street in Laurel. A person was questioned in connection with the shooting, which police say was not a random act of violence. State police say that Tuesday morning’s 911 call was placed around 6:23 a.m. Tuesday, reporting shots fired inside the residence of Bertram Rayburn on the 100 block of Edgerton Street. A suspect has not been named by Indiana State Police, who are now handling the investigation. “Detectives are following up on multiple leads in what is believed to be an isolated incident,” ISP spokesman Tommy Walker said in a news release. Anyone with information concerning this investigation is requested to contact Indiana State Police Investigator Kip Main or Investigator Vance Patton at 1-800-566-6704 (Indiana only) or 812-689-5000. Agencies assisting the state police with the investigation include the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Marion County Coroner’s Office and Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office.
