Lingg, a lifelong resident of New Alsace, served in the Navy in World War II. He served with the Pacific Fleet and was aboard the USS Salamaua, CVE-76, and served as a radioman.

For his service, Lingg was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal and the Ruptured Duck Honorable Discharge.

"We lost a wonderful World War II Veteran," said PG Gentrup. "Now there are only two left in Dearborn County. George Klopp will be 100 on April 13 and JC Lewis will be 99 on June 1. We were so blessed by these patriotic members of America’s Greatest Generation and the men & women from World War II. May we never forget the sacrifices they made and make sure your children, grandchildren etc. know why they can enjoy their freedoms. May George rest in eternal peace."
