Ivy Tech Will Offer CDL Training, Needs Instructors

Press release from Ivy Tech Community College

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Ivy Tech Community College Southeast has been authorized by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles of the State of Indiana to provide Commercial Driver’s License training.

The BMV training license will enable Ivy Tech to soon begin the CDL program at the Lawrenceburg Lakefront Campus, 500 Industrial Drive.  The course will provide 150 hours of instruction and hands-on driving training to prepare students for entry level driving positions.

According to Kris Wilson, CDL Program Manager, new drivers can earn as much as $40,000 per year.  Wilson, prior to joining Ivy Tech Southeast, worked for 34 years at Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corporation teaching secondary mathematics for 21 years and serving as Business Manager/Director of Support Services for 13 years.  His primary responsibilities were transportation and facilities.

Wilson says the CDL program will provide opportunities for area residents to fill a large number of employment openings in the trucking industry.  Ivy Tech will be hiring CDL instructors to assist with program delivery.

Ivy Tech Southeast plans to expand the program to include a Public Passenger License, primarily directed at school bus drivers.  However, the College will also consider the option for commercial bus drivers.

Persons desiring information about the CDL program can contact Wilson by telephone at 1-800-715-1058, extension 7226, or 1-812-537-4010, extension 7226.  Informational meetings will be held on the first and third Tuesday of each month, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Lakefront Campus.

Ivy Tech Community College is the state’s largest public post-secondary institution and the nation’s largest singly-accredited statewide community college system serving nearly 200,000 students annually.  Ivy Tech has campuses throughout Indiana.  It serves as the state’s engine of workforce development, offering affordable degree programs and training that are aligned with local community needs along with courses and programs that transfer to other colleges and universities in Indiana.  Ivy Tech is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association.
