IN Governor Announces $25 Million In Relief For Renters

Approximately 12,000 Hoosier households could be helped by the Indiana COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Yesterday, Governor Holcomb announced $25 million in federal CARES Act funding to assist Hoosiers that are struggling to make rent payments due to the hardships of COVID-19.

“This has been a very challenging time for Hoosiers, and the economic impacts of COVID-19 has left some renters in a tough spot,” Gov. Holcomb said. “The Indiana COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program will support our renters, improve our state’s housing stability and help prevent evictions as the state gets back on track.”

The Indiana COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program provides up to $500 over a four month period to total a maximum amount of $2,000 in assistance to help cover past and ongoing payments or late fees.

Assistance is available to residents across Indiana except those living in Marion County. $15 million in CARES Act funding is being provided specifically to aid Marion County renters.

Eligible recipients must meet the following criteria:

  • Lost their job or part of their income due to COVID-19
  • Current household income, including unemployment, is less than the household income on March 6
  • Have not received rental assistance from another source

About 12,000 Hoosier households could be helped by this program. Those receiving assistance will have payments made directly to the landlord, who must agree to participate.

Applications will be accepted online beginning on Monday, July 13 at 9:00 a.m. at www.indianahousingnow.org.

Until applications are accepted, renters should speak with their property manager if they are not able to make payments. Renters can find additional resources in Indiana's Coronavirus Eviction & Foreclosure Prevention Guide.
