Harrison HS Teacher Passes Away After Suffering Cardiac Arrest in Classroom

Classes have been cancelled for Friday.

(Harrison, Oh.) - The Southwest Local School District is mourning the loss of Steve Coffman. 

Coffman passed away at a local hospital after he went into cardiac arrest in his classroom at Harrison High School on Thursday morning. 

Joining the school district in 2004, Coffman has spent more than two decades working as a math teacher, head boys basketball coach, and assistant coach for softball and cross country. 

Students were dismissed early Thursday, and classes at both Harrison High School and Harrison Junior School have been cancelled Friday.

The buildings are open for anyone who needs grief counseling from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Coffman also had ties to East Central High School and South Dearborn High School.

Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools released the following statement: 

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Steve Coffman, a valued member of the Harrison High School community and someone with deep roots at East Central High School and Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools.

Steve dedicated his life to education and students, as a teacher, a former coach, and volunteer. His impact extended far beyond the classroom, touching the lives of countless students, athletes, colleagues, and families.

He was also a proud parent of both an East Central High School alumnus and a current student, and the spouse of one of our own teachers, further strengthening his connection to our school family.

Steve’s commitment, kindness, and presence will be greatly missed across our entire community. His legacy will live on through the many lives he influenced.

Please join us in keeping the Coffman family, his students, his colleagues, and all who knew him in your prayers during this difficult time."

 

South Dearborn Community School Corporation issued the following statement:

 

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Coffman, a former member of the South Dearborn family and a respected member of the Harrison High School community. During his time with South Dearborn, Steve served as a math teacher and varsity basketball coach, making a meaningful impact on students and colleagues alike.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Coffman family, as well as to his students, colleagues, and all who were fortunate to know him. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
