(Canaan, Ind.) - Students at Canaan Community Academy (CCA) are receiving a rare and exceptional music education from Robert Reynolds, a founding member of the Grammy-winning band The Mavericks.
Even as Reynolds tours North America for The Mavericks & Friends Tour, he continues teaching music in person each week at the small, rural Indiana school. With decades of professional experience, gold and platinum records, and performances alongside accomplished musicians, Reynolds brings an extraordinary level of expertise into the classroom.
His tour includes performances throughout the United States and Canada, with stops in Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Texas, California, New York, and more.
For CCA students, this means learning directly from a nationally recognized musician who remains actively involved in the professional music industry. Reynolds offers firsthand knowledge of performing, touring, collaborating with musicians, and pursuing a career in music; providing educational opportunities rarely available in traditional school music programs.
Affectionately known as “Mr. Robert,” Reynolds has become a favorite among students. Parents have grown accustomed to children arriving home with musical instruments gifted by their teacher. His generosity, encouragement, and passion for introducing young people to music have made a lasting impression on the school community.
Reynolds shared, "My role as music teacher at Canaan Academy remains a big priority, I see it as arguably the more meaningful work I do. I’ve been enjoying the guitar circles lately, 3 or 4 kids just loving their time together, learning. The students represent the next generation, and no matter what they will choose to do I hope music will be a part of their life."
Students have already begun exploring new instruments, experiencing an appreciation of different genres and developing confidence through hands-on music experiences.
To celebrate his journey, CCA is launching “Mr. Robert on the Road,” a Facebook series allowing students, families, and community members to follow Reynolds throughout his tour. The series will feature travel updates, performances, behind-the-scenes experiences, and special shout-outs to his CCA students.
The school will also incorporate the series into educational opportunities, helping students explore geography, understand the professional music industry, and recognize how classroom interests can develop into lifelong pursuits.
“Our students are learning from a world-class musician who brings real-world experience into the classroom,” said Rhonda Pennington, Principal of Canaan Community Academy. “It’s an opportunity few schools ever receive, and we are grateful for his dedication.”
While Reynolds performs on stages across North America, his commitment to returning to Canaan Community Academy each week remains unchanged. CCA is proud to provide students with an exceptional connection between classroom learning and the professional stage.
Community members are encouraged to follow Canaan Community Academy on Facebook for updates from “Mr. Robert on the Road.”
