(Franklin County, Ind.) - On Thursday, May 28, at approximately 5:20 pm, deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department responded to a multi-vehicle crash with injuries on U.S. 52, just east of Brookville.
The investigation revealed that Kira G. Gamble, age 19 of Connersville, was driving a 2025 Kia Sportage westbound on U.S. 52. Gamble stated that she fell asleep causing her vehicle to go left of center, colliding with a 2024 Ram truck operated by Jacob A. Orschell, age 27 of Brookville. Orschell’s vehicle was towing two anhydrous ammonia tanks.
After colliding with Orschell’s vehicle, Gamble’s vehicle struck a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Rebecca D. Holland, age 27 of Brookville, while Orschell’s vehicle continued, striking a utility pole.
Donald Rea, age 33 of Laurel, was driving his 2023 Ford F-150 and Ashley M. Moore, age 22 of Hebron, Kentucky, in her 2017 Hyundai Elantra, were both westbound on U.S. 52 behind Gamble. Rea was unable to avoid the colliding vehicles, when his vehicle struck Orschell’s truck. Moore swerved off of the roadway to also avoid the original collision, causing damage to her vehicle.
After coming to rest, Gamble’s vehicle became fully engulfed in fire. Gamble managed to exit her vehicle prior to it becoming fully engulfed. One of the tanks ruptured as a result of the collision, causing it to leak anhydrous ammonia.
Gamble was transported by Letts EMS to UC Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
U.S. 52 was closed between Blue Creek Road and Holland Road for approximately three hours while Deputies investigated and crews cleaned up the debris. Deputies were assisted by the Indiana State Police, Brookville Police Department, Brookville Volunteer Fire Department, Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department, and Letts EMS.
