Franklin Co. Council Could Vote On Tax Increase Tuesday

By Mike Perleberg   (Franklin County, Ind.) - Franklin County residents may be in for a tax increase. The county council will vote on Tuesday on whether to enact a new Public Safety Tax, according to the Brookville American-Democrat. The income tax would generate about $1.2 million to fund some public safety services that are currently paid out of the county’s general fund. About $884,000 would go to the county, while the remaining revenue would be divided up among local municipalities. Some council members say Franklin County’s reserves could run out by 2017 unless costs – jobs and services – are cut or new revenues are raised. Council president Becky Oglesby said the county borrowed $750,000 from its healthcare reserve fund in order to fund its 2015 budget. The proposed tax increase did not pass with the needed unanimous vote during an August 18 public hearing, but Tuesday’s vote would only need a simple majority from county council. Council meets at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Franklin County Government Center, 101 Franklin Avenue, in Brookville.
