(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – A group of fifth grade students from Lawrenceburg used their creativity skills to earn a fifth place finish at a global competition.
Hannah Halbig, Katelyn Wyly, Robin Downard, Alicia Rodiz, Lillie Oelker and Lizzy Lusk are members of the independent Destination Imagination team. Destination Imagination is a worldwide non-profit program that helps kids discovery their creativity through problem solving competitions.
According to Carmen Lusk, mother of Lizzy, the local team chose to do a dance benefit as their community outreach challenge project. The event raised $1,200 to donate to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for the purchase of books and games for patients.
The team entered the Destination Imagination Indiana state finals with a video and skit about their dance benefit project and won first place, Lusk said. They were then invited to attend the DI Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee in May. Over 1,200 teams from the U.S. and 14 other countries participated.
With the help of sponsorships from Lawrenceburg area businesses and the City of Lawrenceburg, the team made the trip to the globals. They earned a 5th place finish against 55 other teams win the elementary level “Real to Reel” category.
The independent Destination Imagination team is coached by Sallie Streitenberger and Stacy Halbig.
