Andretti Secures 'Burg 2016 Track Championship; Westerfeld Wins Race

Shawn Westerfeld won for the 4th time in 2016 beating Jarrett Andretti back to the checkered flag by a half a car length. Andretti had led the feature for most of the way and had secured the track championship just by taking the green flag. Andretti was primed to take the win as well. As the laps wound down, Westerfeld moved his way to second and whittled the gap down to 2 car lengths when the white flag flew. In turn 3, Andretti went low, Westerfeld followed. Andretti, slipped coming out of the 4th turn allowing Westerfeld to pull alongside of Andretti and nipping him at the line. The rest of the top 5 were Garrett Abrams, Drew Abel, and Logan Hupp. Heat race winners were Nick Bilbee, Shawn Westefeld and Jarrett Andretti. JJ Hughes won the B main. Jarrett Andretti won his first Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint Car Track Championship with an impressive season which included two features wins. Photo by Tim Thomas.   Kramer wins again, Kincaid wins championship after Spille Crashes Joey Kramer dominates for his 41st win of his career at Lawrenceburg and win #6 of the 2016 season. That wasn’t the real story. The battle for the championship was on as David Spille led Scotty Kincaid by 5 points entering the feature event. Halfway through the feature Spille was running in second 2 spots ahead of Kincaid. All Spille had to do was stay in position and he would win his first Budweiser UMP Modified Track Championship. While trying to hold off Keith Smith for second, Spille appeared to have a part failure and crushed the turn 3 wall. Spille was ok but it ended his championship hopes. Kincaid would go on to win his 3rd track championship in the Budweiser UMP Modifieds. As far as the race was concerned, following Kramer across the checkers was Keith Smith, Kyle Schornick, Pete Holt and Scotty Kincaid. Heat winners were Shornick, Kramer and David Spille.   Clark wins Championship after Smith Crashes The dominate car in the hornet class this year has been Dalton Smith. With a 10 point lead on Gage Clark headed into the feature, Smith would start 11th while Clark would roll off 5th. Bhorandon Gibson Jr. led them to the green flag. Quickly, Smith would make his way from his 11th starting position to the third spot behind Gibson Jr. and Blake Gibson. Those 3 would battle it out for the remainder of the race. On the white flag lap, Smith who had made his way to second, went low on Gibson Jr. Gibson Jr., and Smith made contact sending Smith into the outside wall. It would cost him the win and the championship. Gibson Jr. would go on to win the feature, his first feature win. Gage Clark would secure his first career Besslers U Pull N Save Hornet Track Championship. The rest of the top 5 were Josh Hammond, Blake Gibson, Gage Clark and Kenny Higbie. Heat race winners were Steven Hoffman, Blake Gibson, Brandon Gibson Jr. and Adam Love.   Largent wins for 5th Time. Grace Wins Track Championship JD Largent had no trouble winning his 5th Purestock feature of the year. The rest of the top 5 was Corebin McRoberts, Will McRoberts, Don Grace and Dalton Baird. Heat race winners were Don Grace and Will McRoberts. For Don Grace, whit would be his first career Impact Sport Purestock Track Championship. Corebin McRoberts would finish second in the season long point standings.   The next event at Lawrenceburg Speedway is the Fall Nationals Season Finale featuring the USAC Sprint Cars racing for $10,000 to Win and the Budweiser UMP Modifieds.
