$7 Million Awarded To IHCDA In Support Of Affordable Rental Housing

IHCDA was one of 12 state housing finance agencies that received funding through HUD's Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities program.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) received $7 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support affordable rental housing in the Hoosier State.

This $7 million will allow IHCDA to "connect extremely low-income persons with disabilities to accessible and affordable housing."

“This funding will increase affordable housing opportunities for low-income individuals with disabilities in Indiana,” said Indiana Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch, who serves as board chair of IHCDA. “It will also promote greater independence through access to appropriate supportive services.”

IHCDA will work with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) to identify, refer and conduct outreach to those with disabilities requiring long-term services to live independently.

“This funding will allow us to better support and reach individuals with disabilities that are in need of safe, accessible and affordable housing,” said Jacob Sipe, Executive Director of IHCDA. “We are thankful for a wide variety of partners at the federal, state and local levels who will assist in connecting eligible individuals with available units.”

Funding will provide rental subsidies to multifamily properties with units targeted specifically for use by extremely low-income persons with disabilities. Assistance will be able to be applied to new or existing multifamily housing developments.

HUD’s Section 811 Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities program awarded 12 state housing finance agencies, and IHCDA was awarded the maximum amount of funding.

This program supports:

  • Increasing the supply of accessible rental housing units for individuals with disabilities by integrating these units within existing, new, or renovated multifamily developments.
  • Creating effective, successful and sustainable partnerships between state housing agencies and state Health and Human Services/Medicaid agencies to provide permanent housing for persons with disabilities with access to appropriate supportive services; and
  • Identifying innovative and replicable ways for using and leveraging Project Rental Assistance funds.

“These awards showcase the critical partnership between HUD and state agencies to reach and support this vulnerable population,” said Assistant Secretary for Housing and Federal Housing Commissioner Dana Wade. “This funding is going directly to those who have the experience and knowledge at the local level to effectively reach those most in need.”

The $74 million in awards will support up to five years of rental assistance for approximately 2,400 units of housing in buildings participating in project rental assistance.
