By Mike Perleberg (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – A social worker is caught allegedly lying about being raped in order to cover up an all-night, drug abusing affair with a two men, neither of which were her husband. Misty C. Brumfield, 23, of Hidden Valley, was charged October 27 in Dearborn County with Obstruction of Justice (level 6 felony) and False Informing (class B misdemeanor). A warrant for her arrest remains active. The affidavit detailing the investigation filed in Dearborn Superior Court I reveals a web of lies and deceit of law enforcement by Brumfield starting on October 11 when a Dearborn County Sheriff’s detective was called to Dearborn County Hospital to investigate a reported battery and rape. At the hospital, Brumfield told the detective that she had responded a call from a case client late the night of October 10. On the way home early the next morning, Brumfield claimed she encountered a car pulled over on West County Line Road. She told the detective she stopped to help, but was battered and raped by two unknown individuals. Brumfield said she blacked out and was left in a ditch for the next several hours until she woke up hours later and drove herself to Dearborn County Hospital for treatment. Detectives continued to investigate on October 14 by requesting Brumfield’s work cell phone. She met with the investigator and said she would withdraw her complaint and not provide the cell phone for examination. “Brumfield told your affiant that she did not want to cooperate because on the night in question, she had inappropriate contact, drank, and took medications and didn’t want her husband or work to know anything,” the detective stated. Brumfield said her work phone was not with her the night of the attack, but detectives noted that it was found in her car at the hospital. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the cell phone, however, when they retrieved it they discovered that Brumfield had performed a factory reset of the phone, erasing all the call and messaging data on it. Brumfield continued questioning. She allegedly told the detective that she had left work early on October 10 and went to her boyfriend’s father’s home in Florence, Kentucky where she drank, took Adderall, and had sex with the boyfriend and another man. However, she maintained that she was raped after driving around the following morning to sober up and came upon the broken down vehicle on West County Line Road where she continued to insist the rape had occurred. Days after speaking with Brumfield, detectives got a search warrant for her personal cell phone. It showed she was in the area of Florence from the mid-afternoon on October 10 until around 7:00 a.m. on October 11. The records indicated that Brumfield travelled directly to the area of Dearborn County Hospital. Hospital records showed detectives that she arrived at DCH around 7:35 a.m. The phone carrier records showed the phone remained in the hospital area until after 11:00 a.m., approximately the time she was released. Brumfield’s employment status with the Indiana Division of Family Children is unclear. A department spokesman to comment on the matter was not immediately available.
