(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - The new gymnasium at Lawrenceburg High School has hosted its first ever event. The new gym played host to a Lawrenceburg volleyball game on Thursday evening. The Lady Tigers earned a 3-1 win over South Ripley in front of the home crowd – and those who were there just to check out the new digs. Lawrenceburg High School Gymnasium is perhaps the first high school gym in southeast Indiana to boast roll-away baskets for basketball games and an overhead scoreboard. There are also a new weight room and coaches offices. LAWRENCEBURG HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM OPEN HOUSE: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 5:30-7:00 P.M. Lauren Hill, the LHS graduate who became an icon in the fight against cancer last year, is also recognized in the new gym. A “22” – her jersey number – and “Never Give Up” is printed on the floor of a gym hallway. Her retired jersey hangs in the rafters. A trophy case will include Hill memorabilia.

— LburgBoysBball (@LburgBoysBball) September 7, 2015 The $11 million gym was largely funded by a contribution from the City of Lawrenceburg. The gym replaces at the same site the old George “Bud” Bateman Gymnasium, which had begun to suffer serious foundation issues due to rising and falling of the underground water table beneath the gym. The project included a new artificial turf football field at a cost of $685,000. The LHS football and soccer teams have already began playing and practicing on it. If you want to see the gym for yourself, Lawrenceburg High School will host an open house next Tuesday, September 15. The open house will begin at 5:30 with brief comments from school district officials. It will run until 7:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Our volleyball girls at opening night at Lawrenceburg. pic.twitter.com/ZDpYKFbXR7
