VIDEO: Past Property Line Dispute May Have Led Man To Kill Woman Mowing Grass; Injure Husband

By Mike Perleberg  Live Stream Software (Manchester, Ind.) – A woman was simply mowing her lawn when she was gunned down and her husband was seriously wounded Friday. A disagreement over a property line may have been the motivating factor in the senseless act of life-claiming violence, it was learned at a press conference held by Dearborn-Ohio County Prosecuting Attorney Lynn Deddens and Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles on Monday. The alleged shooter is the couple’s neighbor. Terry Wayne Storey, 55, of Aurora, was charged Monday with single counts of Murder, Attempted Murder (level 1 felony), Aggravated Battery (level 3 felony), Obstruction of Justice (level 6 felony), Battery on a Public Safety Official (level 6 felony), and Resisting Law Enforcement (class A misdemeanor). Brittany Black, 30, was suddenly shot in the head as she operated a riding lawn mower at her home along State Road 48 in Manchester on Friday evening, July 28. Kyle Black, 37, heard a disturbance and came to check on her. He was then shot, too. Terry Wayne Storey. Photo by Dearborn County Sheriff's Department. Kyle Black managed to call 911 on his own. In obvious pain from the gunshot he was struck with in the torso, he begged the dispatcher for help. “Who was shooting at you?” asks the dispatcher. “I have no idea. I have no idea. Please just come on and send somebody,” Black responds. A Dearborn County Sheriff’s deputy was first to the scene. Indiana State Police and other agencies soon followed. “Officers that originally arrived on scene found Brittany Black deceased in the side yard of the residence. Her husband Kyle was injured on the back deck also suffering from a single gunshot wound,” said Sgt. Wheeles. The Black home on State Road 148, where the shootings occurred. More surgeries may be needed. According to a charging affidavit filed Monday, investigators learned from multiple sources that the Blacks had previously been involved in a dispute with their neighbor, Storey, concerning the property line and mowing of the property. In fact, detectives say, the sheriff’s department had responded to a property line dispute between Storey and another neighbor in 2014. At that time, Storey allegedly told the officer that if the neighbor interfered with his property, he would shoot him. “We believe none of that had been recent, and certainly not on the day when this occurred,” Wheeles said. Analysis of the Black’s home by crime scene investigators indicated that the gunshots had come from the direction of Storey’s nearby home. Storey had some disturbing words when detectives went to speak with them, according to the affidavit. “You don’t deserve my conversation. Do you know who I am? You are going to find out before the night is over. You’ll die in infamy, agony, and pain just like those two that came on my property,” Storey allegedly told officers. As he was placed under arrest, Storey fought with police. A search of Storey’s home by investigators led to the discovery of two .22 caliber rifles, a 12-gauge shotgun, two spent 12-gauge shotgun shells in the garbage, and a box of shotgun ammunition. The spent shells appeared to match waddings found on the Black’s property. Storey remains held in jail at the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center. He is due to make his initial appearance in Dearborn Circuit Court at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Deddens said Storey has multiple past criminal convictions including Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Criminal Trespassing. He was released from probation for his most recent conviction on June 1. Dearborn-Ohio County Prosecuting Attorney Lynn Deddens speaks at the podium while (right to left) Indiana State Police Sgt.
