Update posted January 18 at 6:54 a.m.:

 

The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-0 tornado touched down in Madison Tuesday morning.

 

The quarter-mile long, 60 yard wide twister with 85 MPH winds did damage at the Madison Municipal Airport. Planes were lifted slightly off the ground and damaged.

 

The roof of a nearby manufacturing business was peeled off.

 

 

Original story posted January 17 at 1:56 p.m.:

 

(Madison, Ind.) – Cleanup is underway in Madison after strong winds, possibly from a tornado, ripped through the city’s west side.

 

Jefferson County Sheriff John Wallace reported a possible funnel cloud was spotted at about 10:30 a.m. near Madison Municipal Airport. The reports of the funnel cloud or a tornado touchdown have not been confirmed by the National Weather Service.

 

Some planes at the airport were damaged by the high winds. The airport’s terminal was also damaged.

 

Nearby manufacturing business Clifty Engineering had its roof torn off. A smaller storage building next door was heavily damaged.

 

One home had the garage door torn off. Power lines were also a casualty of the storm as residents near the airport reported outages.

 

Jefferson County was under a Thunderstorm Warning at the time of the damaging winds. No Tornado Warning had been issued.
