UPDATE: It Happened Again! Truck Hauling Hogs Overturns On SR 1

By Mike Perleberg & Travis Thayer Update published at 3:00 p.m.:  The Dearborn County Sheriff's Department has released new information regarding a semi crash on State Road 1 late Monday night. According to a news release, the semi, driven by Jason Leach, of New Hampton, Iowa, stated he was traveling southbound on SR 1 near Witaker Lane when a northbound vehicle crossed the center line. Leach told authorities he trying to avoid an accident with the northbound vehicle and ran off the right side of the roadway. The semi, which was hauling approximately 77 hogs, then rolled onto its right side.   Update published at 10:59 a.m.: State Road 1 fully reopened to traffic in both directions at about 10:45 a.m.   Update published at 9:22 a.m.: State Road 1 has temporarily reopened at the crash scene in Dearborn County, about nine hours after a semi transporting hogs overturned on the highway between Salt Fork Road and Georgetown Road. Deputies plan to shut it down again shortly to allow a wrecker crew to remove the damaged trailer.   Update published at 7:24 a.m.: State Road 1 may remain closed for another 90 minutes or more after an overnight crash involving a semi hauling a trailer full of pigs, resulting in the deaths of some of the animals. The truck overturned on SR 1 near Whitaker Lane at around 11:53 p.m. Monday, according to Dearborn County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Jansen. Jansen said the primary concern on the scene is the well-being of the surviving animals. Miller-York Fire Department firefighters and deputies have contained the hogs on the highway until a new truck arrives to transport them within the hour. Personnel with the Bright Veterinary Clinic are also on the scene. The crash scene is located between Salt Fork Road and Georgetown Road. Authorities have restricted some traffic on Salt Fork Road.   Original story published at 5:19 a.m.: (Dearborn County, Ind.) - For the second time this month, a semi hauling hogs has crashed on State Road 1 in Dearborn County. The truck went off the highway and down into a ditch on 1 between Salt Fork Road and Georgetown Road just before midnight Monday. S.R. 1 remains closed at the crash scene as of 6:00 a.m. Dispatchers said the highway may not reopen for another three hours. Motorists should avoid using State Road 1 until the highway reopens. The truck was hauling close to 80 hogs, some of which have had to be euthanized. The truck driver was not seriously injured. Local authorities had to deal with a similar situation on November 3 when another truck carrying live pigs overturned on S.R. 1 near Dover.
