Tri-State Casinos' Combined Revenues Up 5%; Hollywood Casino #1

By Mike Perleberg

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg continues to duke it out with Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati for the title of the tri-state’s best revenue-generating casino.

In October, Hollywood won the monthly bout. The Indiana property edged Horseshoe with $14.1 million in gaming revenue, down 26 percent from last year, according to new data from the Indiana Gaming Commission. Horseshoe reported $13.96 million to the Ohio Casino Control Commission, a new low for the Queen City facility and a decline of 23 percent from its first October last year. Hollywood recorded 127,409 in admissions during the month, off by about 19percent from a year ago.  The largest riverboat in southeast Indiana continues to bank on the new Lawrenceburg Event Center and DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in luring more gamblers with conventions and large events like this past weekend’s inaugural Whiskey City Festival. Rising Star Casino Resort in Rising Sun checked in with $3.7 million in revenue, down by about 26 percent. Admissions fell by more than 16 percent to 59,246. In hopes of making Rising Star more competitive, executives at the riverboat have voiced their wishes to do away with the riverboat and put slots and table games on land. That idea got a boost earlier this month when an interim study committee at the Indiana Statehouse approved a recommendation to allow Indiana’s riverboat casinos to build gaming facilities on adjacent land. Belterra Casino, Resort and Spa in Switzerland County saw a much less dramatic decline in October. The riverboat reported $9.3 million in revenue. That’s about down eight percent from a year ago. The number of visitors to the casino was off by about 10 percent at 99,672 for the month. Looking at numbers from both states for the entire greater Cincinnati gaming region, six casino facilities – including Belterra Park racino in eastern Hamilton County and Miami Valley Gaming in Lebanon, Ohio – combined for $55 million in revenue in October, up five percent from last year. Statewide, Indiana’s 13 casinos reported a total of $173.8 million in revenue to the gaming commission, down 4.1 percent. Admissions fell just over six percent to 1,552,181 in October.
