Three Allegedly Stole Items From Empty Home

(Moores Hill, Ind.) – Three Moores Hill residents are accused of breaking into a home and stealing a heater.

The burglary happened at an unoccupied home in the process of being renovated on the 14400 block of Main Street in Moores Hill on October 13. A person who lived nearby and was involved in the renovation, noticed a green minivan pull up to the empty home.

The witnesses saw a man load items into the van while two women apparently served as lookouts.

While responding to the scene, Dearborn County deputies stopped the green minivan that matched the description from the burglary. It was driven by Vonda K. Smith.

Smith, 52; Gary McElfresh, 64; and Shirley Rucker, 55, all of Moores Hill, were arrested while the van was impounded. After obtaining a search warrant for the van, police found inside it a heater, blanket, and extension cords reported stolen from the home, along with prescription pills.

McElfresh has been charged with Burglary (Class C felony), Conspiracy to Commit Burglary (Class C felony), and Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class D felony). Rucker and Smith were each charged with Conspiracy to Commit Burglary.
