Switzerland Co. Jail Near Capacity; Out Of County Inmates Put Money In General Fund

Sheriff Brian Morton gave an update on inmate capacity in late January.

(Vevay, Ind.) – The Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office says the county jail is near full capacity.

According to Sheriff Brian Morton, 56 of the 60 beds are accounted for as of January 28.

Of those inmates, 42 are from Switzerland County, while 14 are from other surrounding counties.

In a Facebook post, Sheriff Morton said the out of county inmates pay for four part-time jailers and also puts between $70,000 and $80,000 a year into the general fund.

“I can remember when I started my Law Enforcement career, if we had four people in jail that was a lot. My how times have changed,” Sheriff Morton said.
