U.S. Senator Richard Lugar
(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana U.S. Senator Richard Lugar will have to re-register to vote in the May primary.
Opponent’s lodged a complaint with the Marion County Election Board against Lugar’s voter registration at an Indianapolis address he sold in the 1977. Lugar has spent most of his 35 years in office living in Virginia near Washington, D.C.
Although two previous Indiana attorneys general had advised Lugar that he could continue to use the old address, the Democrat majority election board voted 2-1 on party lines to reject Lugar and his wife’s registration at that address. Lugar appealed.
On Friday, Lugar’s attorneys reached a settlement with the board. The longtime senator would be allowed to re-register to vote from a Marion County farm his family has owned since 1931.
Lugar must re-register by April 9 in order to vote in Indiana’s May 8 primary election. Lugar, a Republican, faces a tough primary challenge from Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock.
