(Ripley County, Ind.) - The Ripley County Community Foundation is accepting applications for several nursing and healthcare-related scholarships, including the Doris A. Brelage Nursing Scholarship, Riley Duerstock Nursing Scholarship, Marysue (Luhring) Knisley Nursing Scholarship, and the J. Michael Hansen, M.D. Scholarship.
Scholarships are a vital part of the Ripley County Community Foundation’s mission to strengthen the community by investing in education, opportunity, and local talent. These scholarships reduce financial barriers, encourage students to return and serve their hometowns, and help build a stronger, healthier community for generations to come. Each award represents an investment not only in an individual student, but in the long-term vitality of Ripley County.
Doris A. Brelage Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Established in 2008 by the Batesville community, this scholarship honors the legacy of Doris Brelage, a dedicated Registered Nurse and EMS member. Doris faithfully served Margaret Mary Health for 37 years, holding roles as Director of Nursing, Manager of Surgical Nursing, and Infection Control Practitioner. Her lifelong commitment to patient care and nursing excellence continues through this scholarship.
Riley Duerstock Nursing Scholarship
The Riley Duerstock Nursing Scholarship was created by her family to honor Riley’s adventurous, kind, and ambitious spirit. Riley tragically passed away in a car accident on September 11, 2023, at the age of 21. A natural caregiver with a deep passion for the medical field, she served as a medical intern in Ghana at just 16 years old and pursued a nursing degree at the University of Indianapolis, aspiring to become a flight nurse. Even in her final act of generosity, Riley became an organ donor, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and selflessness.
Marysue (Luhring) Knisley Nursing Scholarship
Marysue (Luhring) Knisley is remembered for her caring nature, generosity, and exceptional listening skills. A highly accomplished nurse, Marysue earned multiple credentials (RN, BSN, MBA, MSN, CLNC) and built a successful career as a nurse and medical compliance consultant.
Her leadership and mentorship left a lasting impact on countless individuals. Established in 2023 by her family, this scholarship supports future medical professionals and continues Marysue’s legacy of dedication and drive. Her parents, Joe and Judy Luhring, shared, “Marysue had a zest for life which was built upon her warm smile. By providing this scholarship, we hope that Marysue’s love for her fellow human being will inspire those just starting out on their journey as a nurse, to stay ever focused on providing quality care to all in need.”
J. Michael Hansen, M.D. Scholarship
The J. Michael Hansen, M.D. Scholarship was endowed by friends of Dr. Hansen to honor his memory. Dr. Hansen practiced in the Batesville area and at Margaret Mary Hospital. He had a great appreciation for the nurses with whom he worked. He recognized that skilled, compassionate nurses are essential to the success of any medical practice because they serve as trusted patient advocates, clinical experts, and vital partners in care delivery. This scholarship reflects Dr. Hansen’s belief that strong collaboration between physicians and nurses is fundamental to excellent healthcare and honors the indispensable contributions nurses make to both patients and medical practices.
