By Mike Perleberg (Florence, Ky.) - The person killed in an officer involved shooting at a Florence motel was a 16-year-old boy who, police say, took his own life. The incident is now being called "The Nightmare on Dream Street." Florence Police Lt. Roger Allen was responding to a complaint of drug activity at the Super 8 Motel on Tuesday. Somebody had reported the smell of marijuana coming from the room and two small children left unattended. As Allen came to the second-floor room and requested the occupants' IDs, a suspect inside opened fire on him. On Wednesday, investigators said the person who shot at Officer Allen was a 16-year-old boy from Covington. The officer returned fire, but investigators say the teen died of a self-inflicted gunshot, not from being shot by the officer. Three firearms were found on the suspect's body by investigators. Florence Police said the teen suspect's parents requested that his name not be released to the public. Also found in the room during that shootout was an 18-year-old man, another 16-year-old boys, and three small children ranging in age from five months to three years. Their names have not been released. The Boone County Sheriff's Office has taken control of the investigation. Crime scene investigators returned to the hotel to continue gathering evidence Wednesday.
