Petition to Dissolve Village of Cleves Amid One Percent Income Tax Proposal

TIF Funding and Village Roads are at the forefront of the ongoing discussions

(Cleves, Oh.) - Discussion continues regarding a petition to dissolve the Village of Cleves.

The Committee to Dissolve Cleves is collecting signatures to give voters the option at the November election to remove the corporate powers of the Village of Cleves.

Village Council has discussed imposing a one percent municipal income tax on the Village to support infrastructure projects. The Committee to Dissolve Cleves argues that the Village aims to implement the one percent income tax without the consent of citizens.

The petition, if successful, will allow Cleves to become an unincorporated part of Miami Township.

One of the claims circulating in support of dissolution is that if the Village were dissolved, Miami Township's TIF funds could be used to repair Village roadways.

That claim was publicly addressed and disproven at last week's trustees meeting. At the meeting Miami Township officials confirmed that their existing TIF funds cannot be used for Village of Cleves roadway projects.

If Village Council adopts the proposed one percent municipal income tax, the Administration's first recommended infrastructure priority is the complete repaving of Edgefield Road and New Pine Road as soon as possible.

A sixth public meeting on this matter will be held Wednesday, July 29, at 6:30 p.m. at Cleves Town Hall.

Last week's trustees meeting can be viewed at 26.07.22 Trustees Meeting. Discussion on the matter begins at the 1:12:00 mark.
