(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Oxbow, Inc. is expanding its protected area in Dearborn County. Oxbow is a non-profit organization which owns and protects an expanse of wetland where the Great Miami River empties into the Ohio River near Lawrenceburg and Greendale. It is an ecosystem which dozens of plant and animal species call home, including bald eagle, deer, varying types of geese, wild turkey, and great blue heron. On Wednesday, Oxbow announced it has closed on the former I-275 Enterprises property. The acquisition adds about 400 acres of floodplain to Oxbow’s protected holdings of now more than 1,600 acres. While much of Oxbow’s land is located between U.S. 50 and Interstate 275, the newly acquired property is east of I-275. Oxbow executive administrator Meg Poehlman says the protected land now connects with Hamilton County’s Shawnee Lookout Park. “Thanks to all our members who have entrusted Oxbow, Inc. with their time and generous contributions over the years to allow us to make this purchase,” says Poehlman.
