OCCF Scholarships Awarded to Continuing Education Students

Over $36,000 was awarded to former Rising Sun HS graduates currently continuing their education.

(Rising Sun, Ind.) - The Ohio County Community Foundation (OCCF) recently awarded $36,650 in scholarships to Ohio County former Rising Sun High School graduates currently continuing their education.

The scholarships are funded by the distributions of funds established within OCCF by donors who wish to provide scholarship grants to students who are residents of Ohio County and/or are graduates of Rising Sun High School seeking a degree. The donor(s) who established the fund are listed in the scholarship award. All recipients have been notified via email of their scholarship status.

The Foundation is pleased to announce the following recipients:

ACE Scholarship, $500 each, to Shealyn Bell, Sidney Halloran, Cora Poling and Emma Taylor. Established by the founding members of the Ohio County Community Foundation’s Future Grants Committee, (A)bbey Gipson Berkley, (C)arrie Ferrick Lozier and (E)lyssa Swango Haskell to assist students seeking an Associates or Bachelor’s Degree.

Donald Bowman Memorial Scholarship, $500 to Josie Bell. Established by Danika Bowman Brindley and her family in memory of Donald Bowman who encouraged his daughter, Danika, to pursue a nursing degree.

Denny Carrigan Memorial Scholarship, $1,800 to Abbey Berkley. Established by Beverly Carrigan along with her children, Molly, Toby, CJ, Abbey and Joe, in memory of her husband who was a former science teacher and coach within the Rising Sun Ohio County School Corporation to assist a working adult who has returned to school to pursue a Bachelor’s, Masters or Certification in Education.

Ralph & Evelyn Galbreath Memorial Scholarship, $750 to Shealyn Bell. Established by the children of Ralph & Evelyn Galbreath in memory of their parent to assist students seeking an Associate or Bachelor’s Degree.

Ohio County Community Foundation Graduate Scholarship, $2,000 each, to Emma Davis and Emma Levi. Established by the Ohio County Community Foundation Board of Directors to assist students who have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree and are currently seeking a graduate level degree.

Ohio County Community Foundation Higher Education Scholarship, $1,000 each, to Allison Bailey, Riley Barth, Josie Bell, Shealyn Bell, Emma Davis, Lillie Davis, Ella Eldridge, Kieran Groover, Sidney Halloran, Elizabeth Jenkins, Sara (Otter) Lewis, Grantland Phelps, Sydney Pitts, Cora Poling, Kolton Smith, Emma Taylor, Brent Webb and Kaitlyn Wilson. Established by the Ohio County Community Foundation Board of Directors to assist residents of Ohio County currently seeking a Bachelor’s Degree.

Phylis Pastor and Homer Memorial Scholarship, $2,500 each to Sidney Halloran, Cora Poling and Kaitlyn Wilson. Established by Phylis Pastor in memory of her beloved pet, Homer, to assist students either seeking a degree in the Veterinary Sciences field or pursuing a Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree.

Rising Sun Volunteer Fire Department Emergency Services Scholarship, $500, to Sidney Halloran. Established by the Rising Sun Volunteer Fire Department and is awarded to a student studying in the Emergency Services field or who has served, has a family member serving or a family member who has served within an Ohio County Emergency Service Department.

Joanne and Son Bill Hamilton Scholarship, $600 to Abbey Berkley. Established by Mrs. Joanne Hamilton in memory of her son Bill to help others obtain a license or certification to practice a particular profession.

Wilma Lohide Scholarship, $1,000 to Kaitlyn Wilson. Established by Colonel Kurt Lohide in honor of his mother, Wilma (Washmuth) Lohide to help assist others with their college degree.
