(North Vernon, Ind.) - Officers with the North Vernon Police Department were dispatched to the area of North Jennings Street in reference to a single-vehicle accident involving a golf cart on Saturday, September 26.
Upon arrival, officers located two individuals involved in the accident. The driver reported that he had swerved while attempting to avoid a street cut in the roadway. As a result, the passenger, identified as Christopher Johnson, of North Vernon, fell from the golf cart and sustained a severe head injury.
North Vernon officers immediately began providing emergency medical aid, including CPR. Jennings County EMS and the North Vernon Fire Department arrived shortly afterward and continued lifesaving efforts.
Due to the severity of Johnson's injuries, a medical helicopter was requested. Johnson was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital to meet the medical flight crew. Johnson died at the hospital prior to being transported by helicopter.
The driver submitted to chemical testing as part of the ongoing investigation. No charges have been filed at this time. The investigation remains ongoing pending the results of toxicology testing.
