New Union Kroger Includes Grocery Chain's First Restaurant

By Mike Perleberg (Union, Ky.) - A new Kroger Marketplace store will open for business Thursday in Boone County. The old Kroger on U.S. 42 in Union will close for good at 6:00 Wednesday evening. A new, 135,000-square-foot store will open nearby at 7:00 a.m. Thursday. Construction on the store began last year. The new Union Kroger Marketplace will include Kitchen 1883, a new restaurant concept being introduced by Kroger. The first Kroger restaurant will serve a “new American comfort” menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner when it opens in October. The "1883" in the name is a nod to the year the first Kroger store was opened by founder Barney Kroger. A Kroger gas station, Starbucks coffee shop, and a liquor store are all part of the new Union store, too. This will be the third Kroger Marketplace in Boone County. The grocery chain already operates two large stores in Hebron and Florence. RELATED STORIES: 2014 - Kroger Eyes New Store In Union
