New Scholarship In Name Of Versailles Couple

(Versailles, Ind.) – A new scholarship is being established to honor a Versailles couple who died in a plane crash.

Greg and Candy Wehr died when their Cessna airplane went down in a ball of fire in a Jennings County field the night of January 21. The 55-year-olds were heading home after visiting one of their three daughters in Chicago.

The Wehr’s daughters – Dawn Powaga and Holly and Libby Wehr – have been working with the Ripley County Community Foundation to create a scholarship in their parents’ memory.

The new Greg and Candy Wehr Memorial Scholarship is available to Ripley County high school senior student pursuing a career in either agriculture or education. It is being administered through the Ripley County Community Foundation.

It’s a cause close to the family’s heart. Candy was a former teacher at South Ripley Community Schools. Greg was a local farmer who graduated from Purdue University with a degree in agricultural engineering.

“Greg and Candy were innovative thinkers and had high aspirations for themselves and those around them,” said RCCF Program Officer Jane Deiwert. “They will be remembered for their generous hearts, their love for family and friends, and their happy smiles.”

The scholarship could be worth a total of $5,000 over four years - $1,250 each year for four years.

To apply, students can find a writeable application and more information on the foundation’s website, www.rccfonline.org.

Applications are due in to the Foundation’s office at 4 South Park Avenue, Batesville, by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 2.
