(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - A handful of city officials were on hand when groundbreaking for the new Dollar General store in downtown Lawrenceburg took place Friday afternoon. Downtown Lawrenceburg residents who frequently shopped at the old Dollar General store have been longing for a new store to be built. The store had become a convenient place to shop for residents who couldn't drive, but could walk to the store before it shut down in the Spring of 2014. That Dollar General location reported an average of 700 visitor per day. Developer, Curt Rafferty anticipates an opening date of approximately February 5, but that date could be bumped up if weather cooperates and there are no delays. The new structure will be larger than the former Dollar General, offering more selection and variety. Mayor Dennis Carr made the following statement regarding the new development. “This development will be an asset to our community. A $2 million capital improvement will increase our tax base. Having a store within walking will improve the livability of our downtown, especially for our seniors who don’t like to venture onto Highway 50." The site of the new store will be located at 290 W. Tate Street next to the Lawrenceburg Fire Department.
