Longtime Lawrenceburg Teacher, Coach Passes Away at 79

Gerald Bowell was a Tiger through and through.

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) -  Gerald Bowell passed away on Monday at the age of 79. 

Bowell taught at Lawrenceburg Schools where he was a six-time Teacher of the Year Award winner. 

He also played a pivotal role in Lawrenceburg's sports history, starting the middle school football program in 1969. In 1971, Bowell moved to LHS as a biology teacher and assistant football coach under Dick Meador. That same year he started the high school wrestling program. 

He left LHS in 1974 to explore the business world before returning in 1984, spending the next 22 years as a college prep and AP Biology teacher.  He also coached wrestling and freshman football during that time. 

Bowell was inducted into the Lawrenceburg High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022.

His life will be celebrated on Monday, September 18, 2023 from 11 am to 2 pm at Tanner Valley United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at Tanner Valley United Methodist Church, Monday, September 18, 2023 at 2 pm, with Pastor Ginny Hizer officiating.

Contributions may be made to the Lawrenceburg High School Football, American Cancer Society, or Tanner Valley United Methodist Church.
