(Covington, Ky.) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6 Office announces lane closures on I-275 in Boone County beginning Sunday, Aug. 27, as part of a resurfacing project.

Crews will be working on I-275 between the Boone/Kenton County line (mile point 1.58), to west of the KY 237 (Hebron Exit) at the 7.25 mile point, a distance of 5.67 miles. The project will include partial/full-depth concrete patching and diamond grinding. Additionally, the KY 3076 (Mineola Pike), KY 212 (Airport Access Road), and KY 237 (Hebron) on/off exit ramps will be resurfaced.

During ramp work, traffic on the exit ramps in the project area will be maintained at partial-width (11 ft. minimum) lanes. The project will require the off-ramp from I-275 westbound to KY 212 (Airport Access Road) to be temporarily closed on pre-approved scheduled weekends. KYTC will make an announcement via updated press release/social media ahead of the closure to keep motorists informed, and provide detour information during the closure.

Weather permitting, beginning Sunday, Aug. 27, road crews will shift I-275 westbound traffic in the project area to the inside shoulder to begin addressing partial-depth patch work.

Traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction during the following times:

  • Weeknights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Weekends from 9 p.m. Friday, until 5 a.m. the following Monday.

The contractor will maintain a minimum of two lanes of traffic in each direction at all other times.

Work on the project will be performed in phases. These phases include milling/resurfacing of asphalt exit ramps, removing/replacing pavement, diamond grinding, saw/seal joints and placing permanent striping and pavement markers.

The main benefits of properly using diamond grinding include a smoother ride, reduced road noise and improved friction.

No work will occur on the following days:

  • Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 1-4)
  • Thanksgiving Weekend (Nov. 23-26)
  • Christmas Weekend (Dec. 22-25)
  • New Year’s Weekend (Dec. 29, 2023 – Jan. 1, 2024)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day Weekend (Jan. 12-15, 2024)
  • Easter Weekend (March 29-31, 2024)
  • Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-27, 2024)

Please drive carefully through the project area. Motorists are advised to find an alternate route during working hours.

KYTC has been in communication with the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), Boone County Emergency Management and other first responder agencies ahead of the upcoming resurfacing project.

The $4 million project was awarded to Eaton Asphalt of Walton, KY. The project is expected to be completed by June 30, 2024.
