KYTC Enters Next Phase Of Turkeyfoot Road Improvements

A Public Open House is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 3 at Thomas More University.

(Erlanger, Ky.) - Planning improvements for Turkeyfoot Road – between Dudley Road and Dixie Highway – is high on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) list of projects now underway in Northern Kentucky. The Cabinet is looking to address growing congestion, travel delays and safety issues frequently experienced along this busy stretch of road, which includes access to and from I-275. A public open house will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019 at Thomas More University, Steigerwald Hall, to share project information with the local community and collect public input.

“Turkeyfoot Road is an important link in our transportation system,” said Bob Yeager, KYTC District 6 chief district engineer. “It connects people to businesses, communities, Thomas More University, St. Elizabeth Healthcare and more. Our job is to ensure that they are able to travel through the area safely and efficiently.”

The stretch of Turkeyfoot Road between Dudley Road and Dixie Highway is approximately 1.4 miles long and currently supports more that 40,000 vehicles every day. Studies show that high traffic volumes in this small area, together with short distances between traffic signals and back-ups caused by left-turning vehicles, are the primary cause of travel delays in the area as well as higher-than-average crash rates. These problems are expected to worsen if left unaddressed while the Northern Kentucky region continues to grow.

KYTC’s project team, led by Lexington-based Gresham Smith, will be assessing improvement options including reconfiguring intersections and access patterns, adding and extending turn lanes, adding new travel lanes, connecting disjointed sidewalks for pedestrians and adding bike lanes or paths for bicyclists. The timing for construction will be based on funding availability.

Public input is an important part of KYTC’s project development process; feedback received is used to inform decision-making throughout all phases of project development. As such, KYTC is hosting a public open house to share project information with the community, answer questions and gather comments.
