Kentucky Law Prohibits Blue Car Lights Beginning July 1

By Travis Thayer (Frankfort, Ky.) – Blue headlights can often be distracting and misleading, but a recently signed bill in Kentucky is set to change that. Governor Matt Bevin signed an amended House Bill 74 into law on March 21. The bill will prohibit most motor vehicles from being equipped with blue lights beginning Saturday, July 1, The News Democrat & Leader reports. House Bill 74 will meet United States Department of Transportation regulations by only allowing white light to be emitted from a motor vehicle’s headlamps, with the exception of factory-installed, non-halogen headlamps that emit a slight blue tint. Headlamp covers or film that changes the color of the light emitted will also be prohibited. The intent of the bill is to make it easier for motorists to distinguish emergency vehicles, such as police, fire and ambulance, from other vehicles. Anyone who violates the new law will be subject to a fine between $100 and $1,000.
