(Indianapolis, Ind.) – The Ivy Tech Community College Southeast Region Tuesday, March 13, 2012 received a prestigious 2012 Award for Excellence from the Indiana Department of Education.  Four Ivy Tech Community College students were also honored during a luncheon held at the Indiana Government Center in Indianapolis.

The Ivy Tech Southeast Region serves the Hoosier counties of Jefferson, Dearborn, Ripley, Ohio and Switzerland and bordering areas of northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio and has campuses at Madison at Lawrenceburg as well as an instructional site in Batesville. 

The Award for Excellence was presented the Southeast Region Nursing Program for outstanding performance and achievement.  Over the past two years every graduate of the Southeast program has been placed into a healthcare employment setting matching the skills mastered by the graduate.  Students receive classroom instruction from highly qualified faculty and are subjected to real world clinical experiences.  Input from local employers and a nursing advisory committee made up of various stakeholders in the region’s communities influence instructional program content.  Too, students in the Southeast Nursing Program are exposed to various facets of community service.

Three of the Ivy Tech students honored with a Postsecondary Student Award for Excellence attend the Richmond campus.  Lynn Baldwin, who boasts a 4.0 grade point average and is recipient of numerous scholarships, will complete the Associate Degree of Applied Science in Office Administration in May.  Mindy Richie completed an Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Assisting in December while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.  She is a member of the American Association of Medical Assistants and served as treasurer of the Ivy Tech Richmond campus Medical Assisting Club.  Jennifer Scantland is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Accounting and expects to graduate in May.  A 4.0 grade point average student, she has successfully completed a technical certificate in accounting, a certificate in fundamental payroll, and a certificate in bookkeeping, each earned with highest honors.

The fourth Ivy Tech student presented an Award for Excellence, Ryan McFarland, attended the Terre Haute campus.  He completed an Associate of Science in nursing degree in December and tutored other students in the program.  McFarland had completed a bachelor’s degree from Ball State in 2002 but decided to change his career path into healthcare.

The featured speaker was Dr. Tony Bennett, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction.  Bennett emphasized Hoosiers holding an associate degree and/or high level work certificates will drive Indiana’s economy.  He said Indiana is headed in the right direction in educational improvement and that “every child deserves a chance at a better tomorrow.”
