ISP Investigating Officer Involved Shooting in North Vernon

A 23-year-old female was shot and killed during the incident on Tuesday evening.

(North Vernon, Ind.) – Detectives with the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post are investigating an officer involved shooting.

The incident took place on Tuesday shortly after 7:00 p.m. at an address on Thomas Street in North Vernon.

Upon arriving at the scene, North Vernon Police encountered Rachel Blake, 23, inside a bathroom of the home. According to a news release, she was holding a large knife and was repeatedly told by officers to drop the knife.

Officers used tasers in attempt to disarm her before she advanced toward the officers with a knife. Two officers from the North Vernon Police Department fired their issued handguns, striking Blake at least once.

First aid was immediately administered, and EMS was called to the scene for advanced medical treatment. Blake was soon pronounced dead at the scene.

All involved officers have been placed on administrative leave per department policies.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be presented to the Jennings County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
