INDOT Adjusts US 52 Bridge Work To Accommodate Metamora Canal Days

Press release from Indiana Department of Transportation (Metamora, Ind.) - Indiana Department of Transportation officials have developed a revised plan that will keep traffic flowing on U.S. Highway 52 bridges at Metamora.  The action is in response to public concerns over full closures at the U.S. 52 4-span bridge over Whitewater River and the U.S. 52 3-span slab structure over Whitewater Canal. According to INDOT’s area engineer who oversees state construction in Franklin and six nearby counties, “We have found a way to keep the bridges open to traffic.  We will be using flaggers and work one-lane-at-a-time.” The U.S. 52 bridges at Metamora are scheduled for repairs and new deck overlays in September.  Because of the narrowness of the structures, original plans called for 30-day full closures.  INDOT’s revised plan allows work to proceed in segments on half the bridge—while flaggers direct one-direction-at-a-time traffic on the opposing half. RAM Construction, the state’s contractor for this bridge preservation project, will install thin bridge deck overlays on both bridges: U.S. 52 over Whitewater River, a 4-span 680-foot-long structure located 0.13 miles east of State Road 229 U.S. 52 over Whitewater Canal, a 3-span 132-foot-long reinforced concrete slab structure located 0.29 miles east of S.R. 229 Application of the 3/8-inch polymeric surfaces is designed to seal each structure from moisture intrusion and harmful UV rays.  Flint chips mix with an epoxy polymer to create long-lasting surface friction that maximizes stopping capabilities and vehicular maneuverability.
