Indiana Unemployment Rate Drops in May

The state's jobless rate remains below the national rate.

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana's unemployment rate fell in May. 

According to the Department of Workforce Development, the state's jobless rate in May was recorded at 3.7 percent, down from 3.9 percent in April. 

By comparison, the national unemployment rate reported for May was 4.2 percent.

Local unemployment numbers are as follows: 

  • Dearborn County - 3.2 in May, up from 2.8 in April
  • Franklin County - 3.0 in in May, up from 2.7 in April
  • Ohio County - 3.1 in May, up from 2.9 in April 
  • Ripley County - 3.0 in May, up from 2.7 in April 
  • Switzerland County - 3.6 in May, up from 3.4 in April

In addition, Indiana’s labor force participation rate is 63.7 percent compared to the national rate of 62.4 percent. This rate is the percentage of Hoosiers 16 and older that are either working or actively looking for work. Indiana’s total labor force stands at 3,485,635.

As of June 1, 2025, there were 87,114 open job postings throughout the state. As of the week ending on June 7, 2025, Indiana had 21,755 continued unemployment insurance claims filed.
