Ind. House Approves Plan To Put Some Regulations On Airbnb Rentals

By Mike Perleberg Indiana House of Representatives. File photo. (Indianapolis, Ind.) - The latest plan to regulate short term rentals in Indiana, like those through Airbnb, would let people rent out their house, but maybe not their second home. The Indiana House on Monday approved on a 74-19 vote State Representative Matt Lehman's plan that allows local governments to regulate 'secondary' property rentals. House Bill 1035 would also allow cities and towns to require permits for short-term rentals and charge a yearly fee of up to $150. Permits could be rescinded if a rental receives three or more ordinance citations. Under the plan, any local short-term rental laws already on the books would be grandfathered in. Lehman (R-Berne) says he wants to make sure that people can decide for themselves what to do with their own homes.
