(Harrison, Oh.) – At approximately 9:52 a.m., emergency crews were dispatched to Kaplan Industries on Kilby Road for a reported hazardous materials incident.
According to Whitewater Township Fire/EMS, the incident involved an approximately 80-pound compressed gas cylinder venting an unknown substance.
Upon arrival, crews identified an unidentified gas cylinder labeled “Precision Poisons Gas” that was actively leaking from a damaged valve while positioned on its side.
Due to the unknown nature of the product and out of an abundance of caution for public health and safety, individuals within a 500-foot radius of the incident were advised to shelter in place.
During the incident, a visible plume was identified venting into the air, however, the plume did not extend beyond the perimeter of the business property.
Cincinnati Fire Department Hazardous Materials Unit was requested to assist. Responders were able to safely upright the cylinder and secure the leak by placing a protective cap on the damaged valve.
The incident was brought under control without injury to emergency responders or the public. Shelter in place advisories were lifted once the scene was determined to be safe.
Facility management has assumed responsibility for the cylinder and will coordinate the proper disposal process.
